A 60-year-old teacher at a Los Angeles Unified high school was arrested on suspicion of possession of child pornography on Wednesday, Oct. 18, in a case that the San Bernardino Police Department said is related to the apprehension of a Redlands planning commissioner this month.
Rene Gregorio Estrella is a teacher at Miguel Contreras Business and Tourism Academy High School, according to the school website. It’s located in LA’s Westlake district southwest of Dodger Stadium.
A written statement from Los Angeles School Police Department Lt. Nina Buranasombati did not identify Estrella by name but said the district has banned a person arrested by San Bernardino police from all district sites. Buranasombati would not disclose Estrella’s employment status, citing confidentiality.
Estrella was arrested around 6:30 a.m. after a traffic stop on Padua Avenue at Baseline Street in Claremont. A video posted to social media shows the stop and a search of Estrella’s home in Claremont. A search warrant was also served at a location in the city of Los Angeles that police declined to specify. Electronic storage devices were seized during the searches, San Bernardino Police Sgt. Christopher Gray said.
Estrella was booked into the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino and was released after he posted bail. A message was sent to him through the school website seeking comment. A working phone number for him could not be located.
Police identified Estrella as a suspect during the investigation into Steven Frasher.
“Multiple images of child pornography were shared among them,” Gray said.
