Archbishop José H. Gomez honored 10 teachers and 69 high school students at the 49th Annual Christian Service Awards Mass on Tuesday, March 28 at Downtown Los Angeles’ Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
The annual Mass, organized by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Department of Catholic Schools, each year recognizes students from each of 50 Catholic high schools who display an outstanding commitment to Christian service.
All told, archdiocese officials said the high school students dedicated more than 20,000 hours in service throughout Los Angeles County with such organizations as Habitat for Humanity, Project Angel Food, Heal the Bay and Guide Dogs of America.
“They are a source of inspiration to all people served by the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles,” said Erick Rubalcava, Chief of Mission and Catholic Identity for the archdiocese’s Department of Catholic Schools. “These young people and the teachers that serve them are the changemakers that our society desperately needs and should give us all hope that a future filled with beauty, goodness, and charity is possible, even in a world that is wounded and stained by human weakness.””
