Los Angeles city officials and park enthusiasts gathered at Griffith Park on Thursday, March 9, for a ribbon cutting to celebrate the purchase and donation of nearly 10 acres to the city — one of the last remaining privately-owned parcels within the park — to preserve as open space for Angelenos to enjoy.
A 9.7-acre parcel once owned by Hollywood studio magnate Howard Hughes was purchased by the nonprofit Los Angeles Parks Foundation and donated to the city’s recreation and parks department.
The property was purchased for $175,000, according to a spokesperson for the foundation. Of that amount, $40,000 was donated by the office of L.A. City Councilmember Nithya Raman – whose district includes Griffith Park – with additional donations made by Friends of Griffith Park, West Valley Alliance for Optimal Living, The Sikand Foundation, and Robert and Joan Young.
