Upscale grocer Gelson’s has opened a new supermarket in West Los Angeles, marking the company’s 28th Southern California location.
Located at 12121 W. Olympic Blvd., the 33,000-square-foot store serves as the anchor of West Edge, a mixed-use residential/office/retail development currently under construction.
Designed by Los Angeles-based Shook Kelley, the development will feature 90,000 square feet of retail space, 200,000 square feet of office space, 600 luxury apartments and a half-acre park.
Other retailers that have opened or will soon be opening at West Edge include Solidcore, a pilates-inspired workout facility; Artha, a yoga and wellness studio; and CleanJuice, a healthy juice bar.
Gelson’s operates markets in Long Beach, West Hollywood, Irvine, Santa Monica, Thousand Oaks and Marina del Rey, among other Southern California locations, with additional stores in San Diego, Carlsbad and Rancho Mirage.
Gelson’s grocery stores feature a wide array of produce, meat and seafood, as well as catering service, a deli, bakery and seasonal recipes from Gelson’s Kitchen. The West L.A. location has an expanded wine bar that seats up to 68 people.
Gelson’s President and CEO John Bagan spoke of the company’s expansion in an interview with Chain Store Age, a provider of retail news and industry analysis.
“The demand has long existed for Gelson’s in West L.A., and we are excited to be the grocery anchor in this new mixed-use development,” Bagan said. “We have carefully grown the Gelson’s brand for more than seven decades.”
The Encino-based retailer is further expanding its footprint through a partnership with Rove, a developer and operator of full-service electric vehicle charging centers. Gelson’s is providing food and beverage service for Rove centers.
