Finnish symphonic metal band Apocalyptica is headed to Los Angeles to promote their latest album, “Plays Metallica, Vol. 2.”
Tickets for the show slated at The Orpheum Theatre on Friday, Feb. 28 2025, go on sale to the general public on Friday, June 14, at 10 a.m. at livenation.com.
Apocalyptica originally formed as a classical music Metallica tribute band in the ’90s with cellists Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, Max Lilja, and Antero Manninen. The group released their first album, “Plays Metallica by Four Chellos” in 1996. Their follow-up, “Plays Metallica Vol. 2” was released on June 7, 2024, nearly 20 years after their first Metallica tribute album.
“One of the coolest thing about this Apocalyptica album is the involvement from Metallica, not only supporting us but doing some very special features,” said Toppinen in an Instagram post previewing the, “Some Kind of Documentary,” a behind the scenes look at the recording process for their latest release. “This album is meant to honor Metallica’s music and to have their impact on a couple of the tracks is amazing.”
“Plays Metallica Vol. 2” features new Metallica covers such as “The Four Horsemen,” “The Unforgiven II,” and a new recording of “One,” with Metallica vocalist James Hetfield singing the lyrics and Robert Trujillo on bass.
Apocalyptica has also recorded other metal covers by bands such as Faith No More, Sepultura, and Pantera. In 2003, the band released “Reflections,” an experimental album with only original songs that featured Dave Lombardo the co-founding drummer of Slayer. In addition to their heavy metal covers, the band has collaborated with prominent names in the metal scene, including Bullet for My Valentine, Till Lindemann of Rammstein and Corey Taylor of Slipknot and Stone Sour.
