Temporary nighttime closures of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, necessary for a project to install protective gates, have been delayed several days — and are now set to begin as soon as Tuesday, Oct. 10.
The three weeks of temporary closures had initially been set to begin Monday, Oct. 2.
The project is expected to close the bridge, part of State Route 47, in one or both directions beginning as early as 8 p.m. each day, with the lanes reopening by 6 a.m. the following day. Weekend closures are not anticipated.
The closures by the California Department of Transportation will allow crews to install eight cable safety gates. This work is not related to a larger project anticipated in 2025-27 that would close all or some of the bridge for a year or longer to replace the structure’s aging road deck.
Rather, the current project is designed to keep people from climbing up and accessing the tall cable structures which has been a periodic safety hazard on the mile-long structure that connects San Pedro to Terminal Island. The gates will block public access to curtail what’s been an increasing problem through the years.
Periodic bridge repair closures are not uncommon and signs around the bridge will be posted.
