San Pedro’s Fish Market on fast track for ‘long-term’ temporary West Harbor spot

Don’t put that lobster bib away just yet.

San Pedro Fish Market’s legacy waterfront location will have its last day of business on Thursday, March 2.

But hold on.

The restaurant itself is not closing and expects to reopen shortly — possibly even sometime later in March — at what’s being called a temporary, long-term and newly branded “San Pedro Fish Market Landing” only about 150-200 yards north of the current Fish Market and Crusty Crab locations and within the footprint of what will be the future West Harbor development.

Could this all potentially lead to revisiting the idea of the market taking a permanent spot in the new West Harbor development?

Maybe, Michael Ungaro, the market’s CEO, said cautiously on Monday.

“If they’re (West Harbor) open to working with us, yes,” Ungaro said.

Alan Johnson of Jerico Development, a West Harbor development partner, said this in an email:

“We are currently working on a location within West Harbor for the Fish Market to relocate on a temporary basis and don’t know exactly how long term it will be. … As far as a permanent spot down the road, anything is possible.”

The restaurant initially was in line to be one of the anchor tenants at West Harbor, but that deal fell apart when the restaurant pulled out, saying developers were offering them much too small a spot. Instead, they announced plans to rebuild on Berth 93 where San Pedro’s cruise terminal sits about 1 mile north on the waterfront.

For now, Ungaro said, the focus is on the temporary site so it can open as quickly as possible.

“Once we have worked out the details (for the long-term temporary spot) with West Harbor, we’ll have a bigger announcement regarding location, size, seating, and menu” at the temporary site, Ungaro said.

The family-run market is something of a San Pedro legend and news that it would not be part of the new West Harbor development was a surprise.
