Ryan Clinkunbroomer, 30, this week became the 148th name to be added to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s list on the Officer Down Memorial page, which tracks the nation’s line-of-duty officers who died serving their communities.
Some died of illness or accidents. But 69 have died from gunfire through the decades going back to the 1800s. Included in that grim statistic now is Clinkunbroomer, 30, who died after being shot in his patrol car at 6 p.m. Sept. 16, 2023, while on duty with the Palmdale Sheriff Station.
An arrest was made Monday, Sept. 18, in Clinkunbroomer’s case.
The memorial page list for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department includes these incidents from the 2000s:
- Deputy Sheriff Ryan Clinkunbroomer, Sept. 18, 2023: An 8-year veteran of the department, Clinkunbroomer, 30, was shot and killed in an unprovoked ambush at the intersection of Sierra Highway and Avenue Q just outside of the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station. He was stopped at a red light when another car pulled alongside his patrol car and an occupant opened fire, striking him in the head. A passerby alerted authorities.
- Deputy Sheriff Alejandro Martinez, Nov. 16, 2022: Martinez, 27, was just sworn in two weeks earlier when he was was among recruits from the Academy Class No. 464 running in formation when an oncoming vehicle veered over the center line and struck the group near the intersection of Mills Avenue and Telegraph Road in Whittier. Twenty-five recruits were struck before it came to a stop and 12 of them suffered critical injuries that ended their careers.
- Deputy Sheriff Thomas Joseph Albanese, Feb. 25, 2021: Albanese, 41, was killed in a motorcycle crash at the intersection of Del Amo Boulevard and Paramount Boulevard in Lakewood at about 9 a.m.
