The Port of Long Beach’s free photo exhibit featuring 63 amateur and professional photographers opened today and will remain on public view through the end of November.
The port announced winners of the annual PHOTO Program competition Monday, and those photographers’ work can be viewed on display at the Long Beach Civic Center’s Port of Long Beach Administration Building, located at 415 W. Ocean Blvd. The exhibit is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on weekdays until Nov. 30.
“The PHOTO Program is a very special part of our port community outreach — by partnering with the arts community to enhance creativity and supporting local talent, that benefits both businesses and the community,” Bobby Olvera Jr., president of the Long Beach Harbor commission, said in a statement. “These amazing images reflect the beauty of our port and help us tell the port’s story.”
PHOTO Program photographers were selected from a pool of applicants. Many of them attended a daylong workshop given by professional port photographers, and then were presented with the “unique opportunity” to capture the sights, views and lights of the harbor during a sunrise cruise through the port.
The Arts Council’s panel of judges awarded the top prize of $1,000 to Warren Gatling of Las Vegas for “Where’s Waldo,” a color image contrasting the height of a sailor reeling in a rope ladder aboard a comparatively massive shipping vessel stacked with cargo containers, port officials said.
Second place and $600 was awarded to Tim Bryant of Garden Grove for “Easy Does It,” capturing a head-on view of a ship loaded with multicolored cargo containers as it is towed by a tugboat.
Third place and $400 went to Michael Gonzales of Long Beach for “Birds that Flock Together, Port Together,” delivering a color image of terns gathered on a dock.
