Back-to-school and the fall/winter holidays may seem like a long time away.

But in the cargo and shipping world, they’re all fast approaching — though tariffs are causing uncertainty.

“Peak season starts in July,” Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero said Friday, May 2, referring to the time when shippers begin sending over fall goods for stores. This is the time, he said, when they begin looking to order those goods.

“But they’re not doing it,” Cordero said, “and the more we delay, the increased chance there will be that we won’t have those precuts on the store shelves.”

Both the ports of L.A. and Long Beach are anticipating a drop in incoming cargo — including a sharp rise in blank or canceled sailings, and partially loaded ships — in the weeks to come as importers wait out more news on the back-and-forth tariff discussions, primarily between the U.S. and its primary trade partner, China.

“If you’re a shipper, you don’t know what the future is,” Cordero said, noting that the Port of Long Beach ranked as the nation’s busiest port in the first three months of 2025, topping even its larger neighbor, the Port of L.A.

Looking ahead, cargo is expected to drop significantly at both seaports as shippers hold back.

“It’s a lack of clarity,” Cordero said in a telephone interview, “and what I’ve called a ‘radical’ uncertainty. If you’re a shipper and have products in China when there’s a 145% tariff, you’re going to want to wait if you believe this is going to be mitigated in the months to come.”

The Marine Exchange of Southern California is already seeing a dip in container ship arrivals in San Pedro Bay, where ships enter for both ports, and the slowdown is expected to continue for the next one- to two weeks, according to a Thursday, May 1, report from the facility that tracks ship traffic.

“Dip in container ship arrivals started,” the report states. “For example, only 14 arrived past three days, and…

LONG BEACH — A 24-year-old Compton man was in custody Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting of a man in Long Beach, authorities said.

Malik Cooper was arrested Monday during a traffic stop in Compton following the execution of a search warrant, according to the Long Beach Police Department. He was booked on suspicion of murder and was being held on $2 million bail, police said.

Officers responded around 3:50 a.m. on March 17 to the 5400 block of Atlantic Avenue following reports of an assault with a deadly weapon.

Police said Alejandro Calderon, 52, of Hawthorne was found with a gunshot wound to his upper body and was taken to a hospital by Long Beach Fire Department paramedics, where he later died.

The motive behind the fatal shooting remained unknown, as detectives continued their investigation Tuesday.

Police said detectives will present the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for formal filing consideration.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting was urged to contact LBPD Homicide detectives Eric Thai or Chasen Contreras at 562-570-7244. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or lacrimestoppers.org

Long Beach is going to be a taco lover’s paradise this month thanks to the debut of the city’s first Taco Week.

The citywide Long Beach Taco Week takes place from April 20-27 when dozens of restaurants, taquerias, food trucks, pop-ups and other taco makers offer deals and even create special taco dishes to mark the eight-day event.

“Everybody loves tacos and we have a lot of restaurants here in Long Beach that make great tacos,” said Leysla Rubino, co-organizer of the event.

The Taco Week will feature $5, $10, and $15 tacos or combos that will cover the gamut of styles, from birria to carnitas to pork belly as well as BBQ brisket, plant-based renditions made with jackfruit or mushrooms and even lobster tacos.

“It’s going to be all kinds of tacos and some of the restaurants are even creating special tacos for the week,” she said.

This isn’t the first time tacos have taken over Long Beach. In November, 10 local taco makers competed in a taco festival in downtown Long Beach dubbed the Taco Death Match, which also included taco booths for those who attended.

For Taco Week people will have to go to the various participating restaurants to order their taco deals. The restaurants so far include modern taco chain Kalaveras, which is known for the clubby vibes at its various spots as well as for its chicharron and mushroom tacos.

Also on the list of restaurants is Taco Shore Long Beach, whose menu includes fish, tongue and potato tacos.

For Tijuana style birria tacos, where you dip them into the birria broth, people will want to try Teddy’s Red Tacos, while vegans will want to head to The Grain Cafe for vegetarian tacos.

One of Rubino’s top recommendations is The Lobster Guys and their signature lobster tacos.

“I’m really excited about the lobster tacos because they are really unique and people don’t alwaya hear about lobster tacos,” she said.

And since tacos are a point of pride for these restaurants the Taco Week will also include a…

A swapping of helmets. A sign of mutual appreciation.

Ahead of the official start of the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, race car drivers Colton Herta and Colin Braun swapped their helmets with two members of the Long Beach Fire Department who were on the front lines of the catastrophic wildfires that swept through the Los Angeles area at the start of the year.

Herta, a Santa Clarita native who is racing with No. 26 for the Andretti IndyCar team, traded his racing helmet for fire engineer Tyler Vanderstelt’s helmet on Tuesday, April 1.

Vanderstelt is a fire engineer for the Long Beach Fire Department, serving on the Urban Search and Rescue Speciality Station. A member of the department since 2018, Vanderstelt was assigned to the Eaton fire in Altadena in January.

Braun, who drives the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing car in the IMSA series, and Capt. Brian Sher also traded helmets on Tuesday. Sher has been with the Urban Search and Rescue Specialty team for 29 years and worked both the Eaton fire and the Palisades fire.

After exchanging helmets and posing for quite a few photos, the drivers got the opportunity to hop into a different vehicle: Long Beach’s Fire Engine 6.

Herta turned on the truck, started the lights and roared the siren, and then the racers relinquished the driver’s seat to the firefighters. Out onto Magnolia Avenue they went.

The Grand Prix of Long Beach officially kicks off on Friday, April 11. The IMSA SportsCar Grand Prix, round three of the 2025 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, will commence on Saturday, April 12, and the NTT IndyCar race will roar through Long Beach on Sunday, April 13.
