A man who was barricaded inside a Sylmar apartment for more than six hours was shot and critically wounded by police after he came out armed with a large kitchen knife, authorities said Sunday, March 10.
The shooting occurred at 8:35 p.m. Saturday in the 14100 block of Foothill Boulevard, near Polk Street, Officer Tony Im of the Los Angeles Police Department said.
Officers initially responded to a 2 p.m. call about a “violent male with mental illness,” police said.
They found the man barricaded in an apartment, reportedly armed with a knife. They established a perimeter and called a SWAT team.
SWAT officers attempted to negotiate with the man before he came outside to a courtyard around 8 p.m., armed with a large kitchen knife, police said.
Shortly afterward, officers shot at the man.
The suspect was transported to a hospital in critical condition, according to the LAPD.
