A 71-year-old Pasadena man was sentenced on Wednesday, Feb. 14, to 32 years in prison for fatally stabbing one man and injuring a second outside a Pasadena bar.
On Jan. 29, a jury convicted Jose Antonio Santiago of first-degree murder with a knife of Jerry Chan, 42, a Pasadena resident, and for assaulting Daniel Trevino, also of Pasadena.
The jurors found him not guilty of attempted murder regarding Trevino, who was 32 at the time.
Santiago’s attorney spoke for him and apologized, Deputy District Attorney Christopher Stogel said.
The stabbing was on a sidewalk in the 2600 block of East Colorado Boulevard at around 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 12, 2018.
Santiago was upset that Chan had not recognized him while they were at the Colorado Bar earlier, Pasadena Lt. Keith Gomez said.
Santiago said he had met Chan before and Chan denied ever meeting him, Stogel said.
Although the two men later shook hands, Santiago remained angry.
He walked to a nearby Vons and bought a knife with an eight-inch-long blade, Stogel said.
Chan and Trevino were outside the bar when the then-66-year-old Santiago returned. He apologized to Chan and shook his hand.
But as Santiago hugged Chan, police said, he stabbed the younger man. Trevino was stabbed in the leg when he intervened.
A driver saw Trevino struggling with Santiago, stopped and helped detain Santiago.
