Rescue workers late Thursday morning, Feb. 8, were trying to bring a woman in a 25-foot-deep sinkhole in Fontana to safety.
She was awake and talking, the San Bernardino County Fire Department said.
Firefighters attached a rope to the back of a battalion chief’s SUV for the rescue.
The sinkhole, in a mobile-home park, is in the 8200 block of Cherry Avenue.
County Fire spokesman Eric Sherwin said the woman was walking on red-brick tiles when they collapsed under her and she fell into an old septic tank. They have lowered a firefighter into the hole.
This happened just after 9:45 a.m.
They gave the woman a helmet to wear. She appeared to have minor injuries from some of the tiles falling on her.
They will pull her out with a rope. They decided not to lower a ladder because she might not be able to climb it, Sherwin said.
“This is something we train for constantly,” Sherwin said.
Residents say it’s the first time they can remember seeing a sinkhole here.
