California Highway Patrol officers were searching for two vehicles and their occupants after dashcam video captured an exchange of gunfire on the 91 Freeway in Long Beach last week, authorities said.
The CHP received a report of a freeway shooting on the eastbound 91 Freeway west of the 710 Freeway just before 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, CHP spokeswoman Officer Angelia Gonzales said.
The caller, a semi-truck driver, was headed eastbound on the 91 when he heard several gunshots, Gonzales said. After exiting the freeway, he found his truck had been struck by one of the bullets.
The driver said he saw a rear passenger in a newer model black Honda Civic point a handgun out of the rear window, Gonzales said. The car then sped off and entered the junction road to the southbound 710 Freeway.
Two days later, CHP investigators learned of the dashcam video, which was shown on the local ABC television station in Los Angeles. The CHP confirmed the video appeared to be taken about the time, date and location of the shooting.
The video shows the black Honda Civic catching up to a white SUV, with a rear driver’s side passenger lifting up onto the door frame, pointing a handgun and firing at least two shots.
ABC reported that a witness told the station the driver of the white SUV rolled the driver’s window down and returned fire, but the CHP did not immediately confirm that account.
As of Monday, no arrests had been made. No one from either of the two vehicles called the CHP to report the shooting, Gonzales said.
There were no reports of injuries.
Officers were asking anyone with information regarding the shooting to call the South Los Angeles area office at 424-551-4000, or the Los Angeles Traffic Management Center at 323-259-3200 during non-business hours.
