Two Los Angeles County firefighters suffered minor injuries while battling a blaze at the historic California Yacht Club in Marina del Rey Monday night, Dec. 11, authorities said.
Firefighters were called to the 4400 block of Admiralty Way about 11:30 p.m. and found a two-story commercial building on fire, department spokesman Geovanni Sanchez said.
Approximately 55 to 60 firefighters attacked the blaze from outside, Sanchez said. The two firefighters who were injured were taken to a hospital. Their injuries were not specified.
The blaze was extinguished just before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sanchez said, but the cause, origin and an estimated cost of damages was not yet known.
Video from RMG News, a freelance service that contracts with the Southern California News Group, showed firefighters spraying the building from outside, with fire burning in the second story of the structure. Outdoor tables and chairs were also seen burned.
Firefighters could also be seen spraying water from a department boat in the harbor.
Steve Hathaway, California Yacht Club president, told the outlet he had no idea how the fire started, but went to the club after a member called.
“My dad built this place in the early 60s and it’s just been our home,” Hathaway said. “It’s been an incredible club for our members and our family and this is just such a tragedy to see this club burn like this.”
The club was started in 1922 in the Los Angeles harbor, but relocated to Marina del Rey, with the current clubhouse built in 1967, according to the club’s website.
