A 15-year-old boy was shot to death and a 17-year-old boy was stabbed in a fight between the two teenagers Thursday night, Feb. 2, at Montclair Place mall.
Montclair police responding to the east parking lot of the mall at 5060 E. Montclair Plaza Lane just after 8 p.m. found the 15-year-old with a chest injury. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, a news release said.
Then, a 17-year-old showed up at a hospital, where he had surgery for a stab wound. He is expected to survive, the release said.
No one else was involved in the fight, police said. The motive for the confrontation was not announced.
Family members who went to the scene Friday identified the 15-year-old as Omar Espinoza Rivera of Chino, a student at Diamond Ranch High in Pomona. The family brought candles and a balloon.
The boy’s mother, Leticia Rivera, said she has not learned from police the circumstances of the fight.
“They called me, my son is dead in the hospital,” Rivera said, sobbing, as her brother, Alex Vasquez, held her up.
“Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful kid. Beautiful,” she said.
Vasquez said Omar was at the mall to celebrate the birthday of a friend’s sister. They planned to watch a movie.
Omar was a good student who planned to join the Army, his mother said.
