Former Garden Grove Councilmember Diedre Thu-Ha Nguyen is running for mayor.
Nguyen, a cancer scientist by profession, said on Monday, March 20, that she will vie for the leadership role in 2024 “to improve and protect the things that make our city such a special place to live.”
“Garden Grove is the home where I grew up and raised my family,” Nguyen said. “Serving the city as a councilmember for six years, I know where the needs are and what makes our city such a special place to live.”
Her platform includes improving public safety, reducing homelessness by focusing on mental health, helping local businesses, creating jobs and ensuring the city provides high-quality public services.
Nguyen was elected to Garden Grove’s City Council in 2016 and reelected in 2018. During her time on the council, she supported assistance grants for local businesses and the expansion of senior services, including food programs, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
She lost a bid for an Assembly seat last year to Tri Ta, the former mayor of neighboring Westminster.
Nguyen has received early endorsements from Assemblymembers Mike Fong, Stephanie Nguyen and Sharon Quirk-Silva as well as Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley, according to her announcement. Councilmember Kim Bernice Nguyen, who recently launched a congressional bid, is also backing her.
The 2024 contest will be an open-seat election to succeed Mayor Steve Jones, who faces term limits. In Garden Grove, the mayor cannot serve four consecutive two-year terms as mayor.
