Members of the Kurdish community held a celebration of Newroz, the Kurdish New Year coinciding with the Spring Equinox, at Frank Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas Sunday, March 19.
Families and friends gathered for traditional foods, strong tea and dancing around a traditional ceremonial fire.
Newroz is considered the most important festival in Kurdish culture.
The lighting of bonfires on the eve of the New Year symbolizes the passing of the dark season, Winter, and the arrival of Spring, the season of light, and on Sunday several adults and children jumped over logs of glowing embers as a sign of new beginnings and transformation.
