A parolee who wounded three Los Angeles police officers while barricaded in the basement of a multi-story building in Lincoln Heights last week died of a self-inflicted gunshout wound to the head, according to a coroner’s autopsy report.
Jonathan Magana, 32, also suffered multiple gunshot wounds believed to be from officers returning fire after he shot at them in the 3800 block of North Broadway Street, March 8, Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said during a meeting of the Board of Police Commissioners, Tuesday morning.
All three officers were involved with the Metro K-9 unit and all were at home recovering, Moore told the board Tuesday, adding that they were inside the building when Magana fired and “extracted to a safe location where they began receiving medical treatment for their wounds.”
The remaining K9 units then re-positioned outside the unit, Moore said.
The suspect fired as officers deployed tear gas in an attempt to get him out of the basement, police have said.
Using a robot equipped with a camera, police later found Magana, who appeared to have been “incapacitated,” Moore said. Two firearms were found next to him, including a ghost gun, as well as a high-capacity magazine that contained 27 rounds with the capacity for 31.
Magana was wanted for violating his parole when he failed to report as required by the conditions of his release from prison, Moore said. He had also been named as a suspect in an extortion probe, police said.
Plainclothes officers walking the area spotted Magana on foot, but lost sight of him, set up a perimeter and brought in K-9 units. One of the dogs alerted officers to a downstairs unit of an apartment building that appeared to be under construction, but was converted into a living space, police said last week.
Officers gave Magana commands to surrender for two hours before using the tear gas, leading to the exchange of gunfire, police said.
