California abortion providers are offering more appointments to handle the anticipated influx of patients from Arizona, where abortions will soon be outlawed, except to save a mother’s life. In the nearly two years since Roe v. Wade was overturned, patients from states that restricted abortion have streamed into California for reproductive care.
Why now: The Arizona ban will take effect in less than two weeks.
How many Arizona patients do clinics expect? “We can assume the numbers will go back up to the roughly 13 patients a month coming to us from Arizona just because that’s what happened directly after the fall of Roe v. Wade,” said Nichole Ramirez with Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino counties.
Ramirez said the organizations has plenty of appointments available.
Why will people travel to California? California is one of 15 states that protect abortion rights.
“Arizonans will come here because you can just get on the 10 [Freeway], said Sue Dunlap, president of Planned Parenthood Los Angeles. “We have multiple teaching hospitals, we’re a friendly environment, we have a very dense population, we have multiple airports.”
