What’s closed for César Chávez Day, on either March 25 or April 1, in the Los Angeles area

Government offices — Los Angeles city and county, and state — and also courts and libraries are closed for labor leader César E. Chávez’s birthday holiday.

Los Angeles city and county offices and libraries are closed on March 25 in observance of César Chávez Day.

 

State offices are closed on April 1 in observance of César Chávez Day. For example, the Department of Motor Vehicles’ 2024 holidays, www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/holidays/

Also, Los Angeles Unified School District schools are closed on April 1, tinyurl.com/8jepjerr

César Chávez Day is not a federal holiday.

Chávez was born on March 31, 1927 in Yuma, Arizona. He died on April 23, 1993 in San Luis, Arizona, and is buried at the former headquarters of the United Farm Workers, in Keene, California, in Kern County (www.nationalparks.org/explore/parks/cesar-e-chavez-national-monument).

Here is a sampling of services that have a regular schedule on both March 25 and April 1.

Banks: Open.

Mail: The United States Postal Service delivers mail and post offices are open. Holiday schedule for 2024: about.usps.com/newsroom/events/

Transit: Buses and subway services in Los Angeles run on a regular schedule (www.metro.net). For example, the G Line (also known as the Orange Line) schedule is here: tinyurl.com/ynmrsj4f

Trash: Pickup is on a regular schedule in Los Angeles (more information on Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment, 800-773-2489; click on What We Do, then Collection, and then see Holiday Trash Collection here: www.lacitysan.org).
