PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Blake Treinen was knocked from the game in the fifth inning when Sam Huff lined a ball back up the middle and hit Treinen in the midsection. Treinen dropped to the mound in pain and eventually walked off the field with a trainer. He was taken for X-rays with a preliminary diagnosis of a right rib contusion. … Fifth-starter candidate Michael Grove started and pitched into the fourth inning, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out six. … Daniel Hudson faced two batters in the fourth inning and struck out both. … Joe Kelly and Ryan Brasier each pitched a hitless inning with three combined strikeouts.
DEFENSE REPORT: Mookie Betts was charged with an error for blocking the base on a play at second base in the fifth inning. Derek Hill lined a ball to right field and tried to stretch it to a double. Chris Taylor’s throw beat Hill to second base but Betts was called for obstruction because he had one foot in front of the base. MLB has said it will crack down on obstruction this season.
