The first round of post-election day returns are out, and they show Republican Scott Baugh is well-positioned to make it out of the primary election with the largest share of votes in his bid to succeed outgoing Rep. Katie Porter.
In the 47th congressional district, the sole open congressional race in Orange County, Baugh on Wednesday widened the initial lead he took shortly after polls closed on Tuesday, March 5. As of 5 p.m. on Wednesday, he led with 33.1% of the vote. Democratic state Sen. Dave Min followed in second with 25.6%. Joanna Weiss, an attorney and founder of the Women for American Values and Ethics, a progressive nonprofit focused on public education and gun safety, trailed with 18.9%.

“We will continue to monitor returns because every vote matters,” she said via X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday. “Together, we must beat Scott Baugh in (November) and ensure we have a Democratic majority that protects OC and our reproductive freedom.”
Ballot counting is still ongoing, and county elections officials have until April 2 to report final results to the secretary of state. The OC Registrar of Voters estimates more than 270,000 mailed-in, dropped-off and other ballots remain to be counted.
Min, on Tuesday, said his background resonated with the large Asian American and Pacific Islander population in the district. As the son of Korean immigrants, he is someone who reflects the diversity of Orange County, Min said.
Baugh said Tuesday night that he fully anticipates his lead growing.
“People in this district understand there is a leadership problem in this country,” he said. “We have a border problem, we have a debt that’s out of control. People in this district want to see progress.”
As of Wednesday, Republican Max Ukropina was in fourth place with 14.8% of the vote.
