Trading in their skates for fancy shoes, 10 Anaheim Ducks players took to a different white, shiny surface on Monday, March 4, as they strutted the runway with pediatric patients during the 15th annual Lady Ducks Fashion Show.
The event, benefiting Children’s Hospital of Orange County, had players and their significant others, aka Lady Ducks, joining CHOC patients in showing off the latest fashion trends.
Jessica Miley, senior vice president and chief development officer of the CHOC Foundation, said the money raised at Monday’s event will go to its Kids Care program, funding activities such as art, pet therapy and playing BINGO, basically, “helping kids be kids, even while they’re in the hospital.”
Piper Mangan, 11, stood at the edge of the runway smiling as she waited for her escorts, Anaheim Ducks’ defenceman Radko Gudas, and his wife, Barbora. The trio walked the T-shaped stage sporting clothing from Bloomingdale’s at South Coast Plaza.
Mangan said she likes cargo pants, so she picked a denim version and, “I chose a fun little cute pink blouse with denim purse, which I thought was cute.” She said she had fun raising money for CHOC, but if asked to do it again, “I’d rather play softball.”
Mangan was born with a heart defect, Tetralogy of Fallot, and underwent open-heart surgery at CHOC when she was 6 weeks old.
A fundraising total isn’t available yet for Monday’s event, but the Lady Ducks and Anaheim Ducks Foundation have raised more than $1.8 million since 2008 for the pediatric healthcare system.
