For nearly 80 years, Irv’s Burgers, the storied LA roadside joint, has served up classic burgers, chili cheese dogs and patty melts with neither fuss nor muss. On Thursday, Feb. 29, the eatery will open its first Orange County location inside Newport Beach’s Balboa Fun Zone.
The new 600-square-foot spot at on Bay Avenue will offer the aforementioned casual fare, as well as pastrami sandwiches, tuna melts, BLTs, grilled cheese, cheese fries, chili cheese fries, milkshakes (vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, birthday cookie or Oreo), and orange Creamsicle, cola and root beer floats.
In April, Irv’s will launch an all-day breakfast menu that will feature a litany of breakfast burritos like an egg and cheese; the B.E.C.T. which come with bacon, eggs, cheddar, Irv’s sauce and tater tots; a turkey and hatch chile; the pastrami; and the Burgerrito, a hamburger-burrito hybrid wrapped in a flour tortilla.

Also of note, secret menu items (a la another popular Southern California burger chain) pop up now and then. For example, Irv’s Burgers, in a special collaboration with Searchlight Pictures, prepared a burger for the 2022 gastronomic flick “The Menu” wherein Anya Taylor-Joy sinks her teeth into a burger with two griddled patties, shaved onions, American cheese, special sauce, and pickles. The eponymous burger was available on the menu for a limited time.
Irv’s first opened in 1946 as Queen’s Burgers along Route 66 in West Hollywood. Irv Gendis purchased the business in 1970 and christened it with its present-day name.
