Have you ever thought about how so many things are connected?
All the oceans are really one body of water while looking separated. Islands in those oceans seem to be independent land masses, yet all are connected deep within the ocean.
On land, some trees, like the sequoia in Northern California, join their roots to form an underground support that allows them to grow hundreds of feet tall. They are sturdy, substantial and linked by an entangled, shallow root system.
Kites, parachutes and sailboats all rely on air currents for their movements. They also rely on their connection to the human who is guiding them.
Anyone who has studied their own genealogy may have found branches in their family tree they didn’t know were there.
As humans we are connected in many ways, yet no one person is completely identical to the other. But the ways we are linked can be seen if we try.
Love, peace and joy are shared emotions that bring us together whether we know each other or not. Besides basic needs like food, water and safety, love and belonging are crucial for our well-being. When we realize our connection to each other, we begin to thrive.
It is interesting that we can rejoice in both our uniqueness and our unity. Our sharing with each other leads to a vital, flourishing life. Poet and author Maya Angelou wrote “We need joy as we need air. We need love as we need water. We need each other as we need the earth we share.”
When you are feeling separated and alone, you can lift your spirit by thinking about all the good people to which you are linked. Dwelling on all your valued connections may lead you to make a decision, or act in a way that interrupts those feelings.
Author Rachel Naomi Remen said, “When we know ourselves to be connected to all others, acting compassionately is simply the natural thing to do.”
