Several businesses at a Tustin shopping center were temporarily evacuated after a homemade firework explosion prompted frightened calls to police on Tuesday, February 20.
Shortly after 1 p.m., authorities evacuated several storefronts from The Village at Tustin Legacy, including Chipotle, Bank of America and Board and Brew, which were near an explosion in the parking lot. It was later determined that the explosion came from a homemade firework that was lit, and a male suspect was detained for questioning, Lt. Matt Nunley said.
No injuries or property damage were reported. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad Unit and the Orange County Fire Authority also assisted.
The firework was set off near the historic north blimp hangar, which was destroyed in a fire last year.
In the aftermath of the fire, concern for the health and well-being of the community rose after asbestos and lead were detected at nearby homes.
