Performers in the 64th Annual L.A. County Holiday Celebration took to the stage at the Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion on Christmas Eve and showcased the diverse cultures and talents of the county.
Some of the popular returning acts included two-time Grammy Award-winning Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea, 10-piece Latin jazz band Gabrielito y La Verdad and the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles. Among the newcomers were the America’s Got Talent quarter-finalists Divas and Drummers of Compton, the Hiza Yoo Korean Dance Institute and the Bulgarian dance ensemble XoroTroptzi.
The time-honored and free holiday spectacular presented by the Board of Supervisors dazzled audience members with 23 performances that shared dances, costumes, instruments and songs from China, Korea, Japan, India, Mexico, France, Ukraine, Bulgaria and more.
The performers hailed from throughout the 4,000 square mile county, from West L.A. to Culver City, from the northern reaches of the Antelope to the San Fernando Valley, from Downtown L.A. to the South Bay, and from Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley.
The beloved holiday tradition was founded in 1959 by the late Kenneth Hahn, who represented the second district on the L.A. County Board of Supervisors from 1952 to 1992. Hahn was a huge advocate of expanding access to the arts. Both the parking and the tickets to the event have remained free of charge ever since.
His daughter, Janice Hahn, today serves as a county supervisor for the Fourth District. She tweeted on Christmas Eve that the holiday spectacular is “one of my favorite County of L.A. traditions.”
