Just one Senate seat — but nine Assembly spots — are up for grabs in Orange County in 2024.
California has a unique primary system for legislative (as well as other races, like for the executive branch and congressional) contests: The top two vote-getters in the March 5 election, regardless of political party, will advance to the general. Races with only two contenders will still have a general election in November, per the secretary of state.

Here’s a list of who has filed to run for state Senate and Assembly in Orange County. Because some of these districts span more than one county, candidates’ information was gathered from the Orange County Registrar of Voters as well as San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside and Los Angeles counties’ registrars.
An official list of who will be on the ballot will be posted by the California secretary of state on Thursday, Dec. 28.
Senate District 37
This Orange County district includes Irvine, Villa Park, Costa Mesa, Laguna Woods and Aliso Viejo. Redistricting nearly pitted two incumbents against one another in this district, Sens. Dave Min and Josh Newman, but Min is running for an open congressional seat instead.

Assembly District 59
Spanning San Bernardino and Orange counties, this district includes Yorba Linda, Villa Park and Placentia. Assemblymember Phillip Chen, R-Brea, is the incumbent.
