A man was shot and killed at a Pasadena park on Saturday, Nov. 18, and was identified Sunday as the brother of former Los Angeles Lakers player Michael Cooper.
Around 4 a.m., the victim was shot at Washington Park, in the 700 block of East Washington Boulevard, according to the Pasadena Police Department. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and no suspects had been arrested as of Sunday afternoon.
Former Lakers star Michael Cooper confirmed to ABC7 that his brother Mickey Cooper was the victim of that shooting. The Medical Examiner’s office confirmed 64-year-old Mickey Cooper died in a park.
Michael Cooper, a member of the world champion Lakers during the 1980s’ Showtime era, told ABC7 that he and his brother played basketball at that park when they were children.
The shooting was detected by the city’s ShotSpotter alert system, a sound-detection system that listens for loud, impulsive sounds that may be gunshots.
Information on a motive for the shooting was not immediately available.
