THE GAME: The Dodgers scored four times with two outs in the ninth inning to beat the San Diego Padres, 7-6, on Monday afternoon at Peoria Sports Complex.
PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Ryan Pepiot worked around an error by third baseman Luke Williams to pitch a scoreless first inning. Most importantly for Pepiot, who struggled with his command at the big-league level last season, 17 of his 21 pitches in the inning were strikes. … Phil Bickford gave up a run when Ha-Seong Kim led off with a double and worked his way home on a sacrifice fly. … Andre Jackson gave up a single to Manny Machado off the right-field wall. But he struck out two of the four batters he faced in a scoreless inning. … Landon Knack pitched a 1-2-3 inning.
HITTING REPORT: Gavin Lux was 2 for 3 before leaving the game in the sixth inning after stumbling near third base while running the bases. Lux had to be helped off the field and was taken to the hospital to have an MRI on his right knee. … Will Smith was also 2 for 3 and drove in a run with one of his two singles. … Williams hit a home run in the fourth inning after Padres catcher Luis Campusano dropped a foul pop-up. The error extended the at-bat for Williams. … Ryan Ward had an RBI single and Jorbit Vivas a two-run double in the ninth-inning rally that also featured two walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch.
RIVALRY REPORT: Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was asked before Monday’s game if playing the heavily-hyped Padres carried any extra weight at this point in the year. “I think it’s going to be more, for us, another spring training game,” Roberts said. “But certainly what’s around it – there’s anticipation, expectation. They’re a heck of a ballclub. They’ve done a lot of good things. I think we’re gonna have this conversation all year long.”
