The CIF State basketball and soccer playoffs will begin this week after the sectional championships concluded this past weekend.
The CIF State office released the pairings for all teams that qualified for the state tournament, including Southern Section winners and runner-ups. Some teams will look to add another plaque to its trophy case, others will use a loss over the weekend to fuel a second effort toward a regional crown or state title.
(All first-round Division I-V basketball games are schedule for 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted)
BOYS BASKETBALL
The CIF State Open Division took just five team. Four from the Southern Section and one from the San Diego Section. Southern Section champions Corona Centennial will receive a first-round bye and await the winner of West Ranch at St. Augustine, which will play March 1 at 7 p.m. Centennial will play the winner in the regional semifinal at home on Saturday.
Harvard-Westlake and St. John Bosco each received byes and will play each other in the regional semifinal Saturday in Bellflower at 7 p.m.
Notre Dame, Sierra Canyon and Taft earned berths to the CIF State Division I bracket. Notre Dame, the No. 1 overall seed, will host Fairfax and No. 3 Sierra Canyon will host City Open Division champion Taft on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Sierra Canyon coach Andre Chevalier and Taft coach Derrick Taylor will duke it out like old times when they were in the West Valley League. Chevalier was at Cleveland with star Nick Young and Taylor had Jordan Farmar at Taft.
Pacifica Christian will take on Birmingham Charter at Heritage Christian in Division II. No. 4 Oakwood will host No. 13 Otay Ranch and No. 6 AGBU will host No. 11 Mission Prep in Division III.
