Playa Company Partners with NBA

Cosm has partnered with the National Basketball Association to present a new live game-viewing experience for fans.

The Playa Vista-based technology, media and entertainment company will produce and present select games from NBA League Pass, the league’s streaming service, in 8K resolution on large-scale LED-dome systems at its soon-to-be-opened venues, according to a release from Cosm.

In early December, the company broke ground on its first venue at Hollywood Park, the 300-acre entertainment, retail and residential project being built by Stan Kroenke, the owner of the Los Angeles Rams.

The Cosm venue is adjacent to SoFi Stadium and Intuit Dome, the future home of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team, which is scheduled to be completed next year.

The NBA and Cosm will partner on select NBA League Pass games in “Shared Reality,” an “immersive” experience that Cosm calls CX System. The technology “seamlessly” bridges the virtual and physical worlds, according to Cosm.

Jeb Terry, chief executive of Cosm, called the deal one of the most transformational ones to come to sports in recent history.

“Our team has created an entirely new experience, driven by industry-leading technology, to give fans a new way to watch the game,” Terry said in a statement. “We have an incredible opportunity to work with a partner as innovative as the NBA, to combine our collective know-how, and to rewrite the playbook on how leagues, broadcasters, and brands can bring fans closer to the action than ever before.”

Teddy Kaplan, associate vice president at the NBA, said the league was excited to bring games to Cosm’s venues and further their common goal of enhancing the fan experience.

“Cosm’s Shared Reality technology offers a new and exciting way to bring fans together in person and closer to the game,” Kaplan said in a statement.
