PITCHING REPORT: LHP Reid Detmers pitched two scoreless innings, striking out five. He gave up two hits. “Obviously the main goal was just to throw strikes,” Detmers said. “I wasn’t out there trying to do anything crazy. I just wanted to go out there and throw strikes pretty much just land every pitch, and I thought I did that well today and had good results.” … RHP Ben Joyce pitched a perfect inning in his first outing a big league spring training game. He struck out two and got a broken-bat popup. Joyce’s fastball was 96-99 mph. The Angels’ third-round pick last summer, Joyce has consistently pitched at over 100 mph and he has hit 105 mph. Manager Phil Nevin said plate ump Alfonso Marquez commented to him between innings about Joyce, saying: “Wow, what was that?” … RHP Sam Bachman struck out all three hitters he faced. Bachman’s fastball was 96-97 mph, which is closer to what he threw in college before seeing his velocity dip after a back injury last season. … RHPs Andrew Wantz, Zack Weiss, Mason Erla and Coleman Crow and LHP José Quijada also pitched scoreless innings. … Angels pitchers have allowed one run in their first two games.
HITTING REPORT: Shohei Ohtani swung at the first pitch he saw and drilled a towering drive to right-center.
