Manhattan Beach will mourn the sudden loss of one of their own tonight.
To honor Manhattan Beach Police motorcycle officer and Medal of Valor recipient Chad Swanson, who died in a traffic accident, Wednesday, Oct. 4, there will be a candlelight vigil and procession at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6,
The vigil begins at Civic Center Plaza, followed by a procession to the Manhattan Beach Pier, according to a press release issued by the City.
“This is a time for us to come together as a community, mourn the loss of our friend and colleague, show our support to Officer Swanson’s family, and honor the legacy and bravery of Officer Chad Swanson,” said Manhattan Beach Chief Rachel Johnson, in the statement.
Swanson, 35, was a 13-year member of the MBPD who became a motorcycle officer in 2017, according to Johnson.
That same year, during the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas, Swanson — despite being shot in the arm himself — ran toward the gunfire to help get others out of the area during one of the worse mass shootings ever in the U.S.
Swanson is survived by his wife and three boys ages 4, 2 and 10 months.
The Manhattan Beach Police Officers’ Association (MBPOA) has created a donation fund for the Swanson family via the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC) Fund a Hero Program.
The Manhattan Beach Civic Center is located at 320 15th Street in Manhattan Beach.
