Californians paid their respects to Dianne Feinstein on Wednesday ahead of the funeral service today in San Francisco.
Laphonza Butler — who was appointed to Feinstein’s seat in the U.S. Senate by Gov. Gavin Newsom —said this at the U.S. Capitol Thursday: “To be able to sit in her seat, knowing that I will never be able to fill her shoes, is the honor of a lifetime.”
What to expect today
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is among the scheduled speakers at today’s memorial service at San Francisco City Hall, where Feinstein launched her political career more than 50 years ago.
Also scheduled to speak is Feinstein’s granddaughter, Eileen Mariano.
- President Joe Biden will deliver remarks by video.
- Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to attend, as well as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York.
- Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to attend, as well as former Gov. Jerry Brown.
The 1 p.m. service is no longer open to the public due to security concerns, according to Feinstein’s office.
