A pedestrian was found dead in Santa Ana after an allegedly intoxicated driver hit the man and fled, police said.
On Monday, Feb. 20, around 3:29 a.m., Santa Ana police responded to multiple calls regarding a pedestrian down in the roadway of West 1st Street at North Figueroa Street, east of Harbor Boulevard. The pedestrian was located by police and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Orange County Fire Authority, Santa Ana Police Sgt. Maria Lopez said.
According to investigators, the pedestrian was in the eastbound lane of West 1st Street when he was struck by the driver, who was also traveling east on 1st Street.
Police located the suspect, Carlos Alberto Lopez Nunez, 26, from Santa Ana, and took Nunez into custody on suspicion of a felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence.
The victim’s name had not been released by the coroner as of Wednesday.
Lopez said this is the third pedestrian traffic fatality on 1st Street this year after two people were killed in January. The two earlier incidents occurred on the 2800 block west of Fairview Street, over a span of two days.
