It is well known how good Orange County is at producing Major League Baseball players.
Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers was the Orange County high school baseball player of the year at El Modena High School in Orange. Royce Lewis of JSerra in San Juan Capistrano was the MLB Draft No. 1 overall pick a few years ago. Gary Carter of Sunny Hills, in Fullerton, is in the Hall of Fame.
Laguna Hills alum Shane Bieber was a Cy Young Award winner in 2020. Randy Jones from Brea Olinda High won the Cy Young in 1976.
Gerrit Cole from Orange Lutheran is the ace pitcher for the New York Yankees. This season Cypress High brothers David and Dominic Fletcher were on the same big-league field, at Angel Stadium on June 30, David playing for the Angels and Dominic playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
On Wednesday Fullerton High School’s baseball program accomplished something extraordinary when Fullerton alum Michael Lorenzen pitched a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals in his Philadelphia Phillies debut.
Lorenzen is the fourth Fullerton High pitcher to pitch in the majors, and all four of those pitchers have thrown a no-hitter in the majors. No other high school can make that claim.

Hall of Famer Walter Johnson was the first, throwing his only no-hitter in 1920. Then came Steve Busby of the Kansas City Royals who tossed two no-hitters, in 1973 and ‘74. Mike Warren pitched his no-hitter for the Oakland A’s in 1983.
Lorenzen, by the way, also was an excellent hitter at Fullerton High. He went on to play at Cal State Fullerton which has also produced several MLB players, including Angels manager Phil Nevin.
