What to expect: Offense has been the Cougars’ strength in recent seasons. Defense could be their forte in 2023. They have four returning starters on offense and four returning starters on defense. “We had to outscore everybody the last four years,” said Capistrano Valley fifth-year coach Sean Curtis. “So we’re excited to see what our team will be like this year.” Senior Jackson Sievers and junior Reily Walker were all-league first team selections last season when the Cougars finished 4-6 overall and 0-3 in league. Sievers (6-2, 220) had a team-high 99 tackles last year and is among the top 10 linebackers in Orange County. “He’s a physical inside linebacker who can also cover receivers,” said Curtis of Sievers. Walker also will see action on offense as a running back and receiver. Junior Hudson Campbell’s 26 receptions last season were second-most on the team. Dylan Fingersh was the All-Orange County second team kicker last season when he booted eight field goals as a junior and is among the county’s top 10 specialists. Junior Michael Sturdivant was all-league first team in ‘22.
MISSION VIEJO

What to expect: The Diablos are favored to win another South Coast League championship and are No. 31 in the MaxPreps.com national rankings. Mission Viejo, which last year went 10-2 overall, including a win over Centennial of Corona in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs, has a large collection of college-prospect players.
