It’s not like you really need an excuse to hit the beach.
But if you are looking to cool off from this muggy, warm weather, there’s a few things you can do down at the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach this week, considered the world’s largest action-sports festival.
And the best part? It’s (mostly) free. Here are a few ideas if you want to check it out.
1. Catch the surf show: Show up any time on the southside of the pier after 7:30 a.m. and you’re sure to see some great surfing action. A great vantage point is from the pier watching from above, or take a towel or chair to pull up on the sand. Don’t want to get your feet sandy? There’s a big screen to watch from the grassy area on the northside of the pier.
2. Watch motocross freestylers take to the air: Crowds gathered over the weekend to watch the high-flying motocross riders doing tricks for the Nitro Circus Full Throttle FMX show using a ramp built right on the sand. But there’s still another day to see the dare-devil action, Saturday Aug. 5, so plan accordingly if you want to watch the riders. Showtimes are: 11:30 a.m., 1:30 and 3:30 p.m.
3. Lounge in the beach bar: There’s a mega tent at the south end of the event that has transformed into a bar on the beach. It’s free to hang out at the tables or on couches in the shaded area, and outside there are umbrella-covered tables closer to the surf action. There’s a DJ on the weekend to add to the vibe.
Want a cocktail? It will cost you, but there’s plenty of options – craft drinks, beer and seltzers – if you don’t mind forking over some cash.
4. Music on the sand: There’s a stage set up right on the sand with performances starting Thursday, Aug. 3. While it won’t be a mega show like when tens of thousands of people showed up for Weezer back in 2010, there’s a nice chill area in the festival to soak in the sounds. Thursday kicks off with Sweet Nobody at 2 p.m., followed by Nice & Swell on Friday and Wes Chiller on…
