National Night Out, the first Tuesday in August — Aug. 1 this year — brings law enforcement officers, emergency personnel and the public together to learn about local neighborhood crime, crime prevention tips, safety tips around home and creating neighborhood watch groups while having fun in a relaxed atmosphere.
Some cities hold their event on other dates, often coinciding with an on-going event like an evening farmers market or San Fernando’s event in early October when the weather is cooler.
Neighborhoods may put together their own block-party — often inviting their senior lead officers — to discuss how to keep their neighborhood safer from crime.
Remember to turn on your front porch light as a symbol of public awareness for the annual event.
