Liquor license for Santa Ana’s Culichitown suspended after drinks served to teen involved in deadly crash

A Santa Ana bar and restaurant had its liquor license temporarily revoked after serving drinks to an 18-year-old who later got into a crash in Lynwood that killed another teenager in 2021.

Investigators from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control said a server at Culichitown’s Santa Ana location gave drinks to 18-year-old Jose Clemente the night of Nov. 12, 2021.

They said Clemente later got behind the wheel of a car travelling eastbound on the 105 freeway early in the morning the next day: At 5:50 a.m., Clemente’s car crashed near the Long Beach Boulevard exit. News reports from the time said there were two vehicles involved.

At the time, there were six people in the car, including Clemente. One of the passengers, 18-year-old Osiris Servin, was killed. All the others inside were injured.

Los Angeles County court records were not available showing whether Clemente was charged with driving under the influence in the crash. But ABC said its investigators were notified that the driver involved was under 21, triggering their review.

A spokesman for department said Culichitown’s liquor license allows the restaurant to serve minors, but they’re still “required to carefully check IDs if patrons order alcoholic beverages.”

The department said Clemente and the group of other teenagers all went to Culichitown that night, where they were served drinks. The department did not say whether the restaurant checked their IDs, or if they were presented with fake IDs. Regardless, a server gave the group alcoholic drinks.

The ABC accused the restaurant of furnishing alcoholic beverages to a minor causing great bodily injury or death, a misdemeanor. The department said the restaurant settled and agreed to have their liquor license suspended indefinitely.

The agreement requires Culichitown to have its license suspended for at least 30 days, according to a statement from the ABC. After the 30 days, the restaurant must transfer the license to another owner within the…
