Arguably the world’s most esteemed dining guide, Michelin announced its California constellation for 2023 at a ceremony in Oakland on Tuesday evening, July 18. The majority of last year’s recipients maintained their one-star ratings this year, with Costa Mesa continuing to dominate the dining scene within the Michelin universe. Orange County’s top restaurants remain the same as last year: Hana re, Knife Pleat, and Taco Maria.
Two Southern California restaurants received their first one-star rating: Heritage in Long Beach and Valle in Oceanside. No new two- or three-star restaurants were awarded for 2023.
Before Tuesday’s announcement, the California Michelin Guide added three “new discoveries” to its Orange County roster last week, which include Kaori Sushi (Fullerton), Poppy & Seed (Anaheim), and Taira Sushi & Sake (Garden Grove). While these spots aren’t typically awarded stars, they are worthy of a hat tip from the tire company’s annual list of restaurants.
Michelin Guide’s award system is ranked on a three-tier system: one star (“high-quality cooking, worth a stop,” according to the official guide), two stars (“excellent cooking, worth a detour”), and three stars (“exceptional cuisine, worth a journey”).
