Election Day is well underway for residents of the Los Angeles City Council’s 6th District, where voters have until 8 tonight to cast their vote for one of two candidates seeking to fill the seat vacated last October by then-Councilmember Nury Martinez, who resigned in disgrace for her role in a leaked racist audio scandal.
Imelda Padilla, whose background is in community organizing, and Marisa Alcaraz, a top aide to City Councilmember Curren Price, are vying to finish out Martinez’s term, which ends December 2024.
Council District 6 represents parts of central and eastern San Fernando Valley. It includes the communities of Arleta, Lake Balboa, North Hills, North Hollywood, Panorama City, Sun Valley and Van Nuys.
With a few hours left before voting ends on Tuesday, June 27, the county registrar’s office reported having received 11,019 vote-by-mail ballots as of the morning. An additional 432 people voted in person at a vote center, according to Mike Sanchez, spokesperson for the registrar’s office.
Special elections tend to have low voter turnout. During the April primary election, the voter turnout was just 11.4%, with 13,510 people in District 6 casting ballots.
Sanchez said Tuesday that historically, a final surge of voters show up to vote centers after they get off work on Election Day.
“Even if it’s 5 o’clock, I certainly encourage anyone who has not voted to get out there and cast their ballots,” he said, adding that people who are at a vote center or in line by 8 p.m., when the centers close, will be allowed to vote.
Seven vote centers are open until 8 p.m. in District 6 for in-person voting or to drop off completed ballots.
Voters may also drop off ballots at any of the 13 ballot drop-boxes within the district through Election Day. Ballots dropped in mailboxes must be postmarked by today.
