More than 100 kids have been spending a few days this week getting summer ready … by brushing up on their safety knowledge.
The children, ages 6 to 9, are participating in the ZAC Camp at the Boys & Girls Club of Fullerton that teaches water safety, first aid and drowning prevention.
They are also learning how to help a person who is drowning and how to avoid getting into a risky situation themselves.
“It’s critical that children get exposed to principals that will keep them safe in and around water,” said Matthew Barnes, program manager for ZAC Camp.
Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause of unintentional death for ages 5 to 14, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.
Campers are also learning about first aid and sun protection from nursing students at Cal State Fullerton.
This is the seventh year the Fullerton youth club has hosted the ZAC Camp.
The ZAC Foundation was started in 2008 by Karen and Brian Cohn to honor their 6-year-old son Zachary Archer Cohn.
Zachary drowned in a pool drain entrapment in the family’s back yard pool. The foundation has helped more than 20,000 children and families learn about water safety.
