The Republican-led House on Wednesday blocked a measure to censure Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Burbank.
Filed by Florida Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a rising star on the right, the resolution criticized Schiff for his role in investigations of former President Donald Trump, specifically while Schiff was a member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
It also sought to have Schiff fined $16 million which, according to Luna’s office, amounts to half the cost of the investigations into alleged collusion between Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia.
“Today’s partisan and failed attempt to censure me is a badge of honor that I will wear proudly,” Schiff said on social media after the vote. “MAGA Republicans are going after me because I dared to hold Donald Trump accountable. These efforts to intimidate me will not succeed. I will always defend our democracy.”
Hours before the vote, Luna said: “Adam Schiff literally used his position on House Intelligence, read a cooked up dossier into a congressional record and honestly helped with the illegal spying and violation of the American citizen civil liberties and yet people are still trying to defend this guy.”
The House voted 225-196 to table the resolution, essentially killing it, with seven lawmakers voting present.
Twenty Republicans bucked party lines to vote in favor of tabling the measure, including five from California: Kevin Kiley of Rocklin, Young Kim of Anaheim Hills, Tom McClintock of Modesto, Jay Obernolte of Hesperia and David Valadao of Hanford.
