A barbecue showdown is coming to Long Beach, and those who get there early enough to watch the grilling action will even score some free grub.
The nationwide All-Star BBQ Championship Series makes a stop at Famous Dave’s Bar-B-Que restaurant at 300 S. Pine Ave. in downtown Long Beach on June 17.
That’s where six local barbecue teams will be showing off their cooking skills and competing in various categories for a chance to head off to Dallas, Texas later this year to compete in the World Barbecue Championships.
“This is really an exciting competition that gives our weekend barbecue warriors the chance to show off their skills and make some great barbecue,” said Dave Anderson, founder of Famous Dave’s, who will be at the Long Beach event.
The Long Beach competition is one of 15 taking place across the nation at Famous Dave’s restaurants in order to narrow the field down to the best of the best to compete for the world title.
“When these guys and gals who love barbecue get in front of a grill concocting their own secret barbecue sauces and food, it’s almost like they’re making a magical potion,” he said. “They get very passionate about what they’re doing, they really have this intense passion of wanting to be the best.”
The 12-4 p.m. event is free and open to the public, but get there quick because the first 200 people to show up will be able to get free barbecue samples as they watch the masters grill.
And for those 21-and-older there will also be free samples of Kurvball Original Barbecue Whiskey and other swag. People can also enter to win a Gateway Drum smoker.
The grillers will be competing in several categories including chicken, wings, ribs and a wildcard item, which is anything the cooks want to make.
And if you miss this one, the competition will return to the Famous Dave’s restaurant in Rancho Cucamonga at 11470 Fourth Street on Aug. 19.
