Bob Thate, who coached Foothill’s boys basketball team for several years and was a renowned shooting coach, died Thursday.
He was 76.
Todd Halbreich, who worked with Thate in shooting instruction, said Thate had a successful fight against cancer but a recent occurrence of melanoma followed by COVID-19 caused Thate’s death.
Thate coached Foothill in the 1990s. He also coached at Long Beach State and Pepperdine, and was a shooting instructor with the Clippers and the New Jersey Nets. He also worked individually with many players including Jason Kidd and Luke Walton.
Thate was an outstanding player at Occidental College. He was drafted by the Lakers in the 17th round in 1970 and was cut during training camp.
