Orange County boys basketball Top 25: Mater Dei returns to No. 1 in rankings, Feb. 13

This week’s Orange County high school boys basketball rankings.

Notable this week: Mater Dei returns to its familiar position of No. 1 after convincing wins over Long Beach Poly and Crean Lutheran in the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs. … JSerra rises to No. 2 in the rankings after Division 1 playoff wins over Great Oak and Rolling Hills Prep.  … Sage Hill makes its Top 25 debut after advancing to the Division 4A quarterfinals.

BOYS BASKETBALL TOP 25

(Records through Sunday, Feb.12)

1. Mater Dei 24-6: The Monarchs looked great in their 88-61 playoff win over Crean Lutheran as Owen Verna tied the school record with nine 3-pointers in a game.

2. JSerra 22-8: The Lions’ eight-game winning streak includes victories over Orange Lutheran, Santa Margarita, St. John Bosco and Division 1 playoff wins over Great Oak 64-53 and Rolling Hills Prep 48-45.

Previous ranking: 3

3. Pacifica Christian: The San Joaquin League champions defeated Portola 64-52 and Dana Hills 76-56 in the Division 2A playoffs to advance to the quarterfinals against Sonora.

Previous ranking: 1

4. Orange Lutheran 19-10: The Lancers are in the 2AA quarterfinals after playoff wins over Aliso Niguel 69-52 and Edison 60-59.

Previous ranking: 4

5. Canyon 24-5: After a first-round bye in the playoffs, the Comanches defeated Crossroads 73-64 in the Division 1 second round, led by Brandon Benjamin’s 27 points

Previous ranking: 6

6. Los Alamitos 23-7: Trent Minter’s 21 points led the Griffins to a 55-50 Division 1 first-round win over Santa Margarita before their season ended with a 70-65 loss to St. Paul.

Previous ranking: 11

7. Santa Margarita 21-9: The Eagles’ season ended with a loss to Los Alamitos 55-50 in the first round of the Division 1 playoffs.

Previous ranking: 5

8. Foothill 24-6: A 59-51 loss to Heritage Christian in the Division 1 first round ended the Knights’ season.
