They started out practicing in a guitar shop in Santa Monica, then become a viral sensation on YouTube and went on to wow audiences and impress the judges on “America’s Got Talent.”
Now the 190-member Angel City Chorale is marking yet another milestone with a pair of hit-filled 30-year anniversary concerts dubbed “30 Rocks! Celebrating the Best of 3 Decades.”
“These concerts are our greatest hits. We asked our members and audience to vote on what they most wanted to hear and we’re doing all the stuff people love,” said Sue Fink, artistic director and founder of the group.
The anniversary shows will take place on June 11-12 at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
Besides the songs that have been popular with their audiences through the years, the anniversary shows will include a few songs that will pay homage to their time on the popular competition show, where they made it to the semi finals on season 13.
“It was pretty thrilling to have that opportunity. We didn’t think there was a chance that a choir was going to win, but we just did it for the ride and to have a great time and we did,” Fink said.
The Westside-based choir formed in 1993 when Fink, who was then voice teacher, decided to get 18 of her students together to form a chorale group. Their early rehearsals were held at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica and things quickly picked up with the chorale playing constant shows nationally and throughout the world, eventually going on to perform more than 250 concerts in 20 languages.
“It just phenomenally grew,” Fink said. “It just started expanding so quickly and we got so many cool opportunities.”
The group got their first big taste of fame a few years ago when they posted their rendition of Toto’s 1982 hit “Africa” on YouTube, which amassed more than 23 million views. That got the attention of “America’s Got Talent” producers and they invited the group to compete back in 2018.
